What Is Agentic Commerce? A Store Owner's Guide to AI Shopping Agents
AI agents are starting to shop and check out on a customer's behalf. Here is what agentic commerce means for ecommerce owners, and how to prepare your store.
Agentic commerce is when an AI agent does the shopping for a person: it understands what they want, finds products across stores, compares them, and increasingly completes the purchase on their behalf. Today most of this happens as recommendation, an AI naming the best stores for a need. The next step, agents that browse and check out directly, is arriving. This guide explains what it means for a store owner and how to be ready.
From search to recommendation to action
It helps to see this as three stages:
- Search. A shopper types keywords into Google and clicks a blue link. This is the world ecommerce grew up in.
- Recommendation. A shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI "what should I buy for X," and the model names a few stores and products. This is happening at scale today. Generative-AI shopping traffic to retail sites grew roughly 4,700% year over year, according to Adobe.
- Action. An AI agent, told "buy me a good X under $50," goes and does it: finds the product, adds it to a cart, and completes checkout. This is the agentic stage, and it is emerging now.
Most of the value today is in stage two. But stores that prepare for stage three will be the ones agents can actually transact with.
Why owners should care now
Two reasons. First, the recommendation stage is already moving money, and being invisible to it means an AI hands your customer to a competitor. Second, the groundwork for the recommendation stage is the same groundwork you need for the agentic stage. Getting ready is not a bet on the future, it is table stakes for the present that also future-proofs you.
What makes a store agent-ready
An AI agent can only work with a store it can read and act on. In practice that means:
- Readable products. Clean structured data (Schema.org
ProductandOffer) and accurate feeds, so an agent knows exactly what you sell, at what price, and whether it is in stock. - Open to AI crawlers. Your
robots.txtshould welcome AI user agents, not block them. - Discoverable in the programs. Presence in the merchant and shopping programs that AI surfaces pull from.
- A clean path to buy. A checkout that does not break for a session that arrived through an AI, and product data an agent can trust enough to act on.
Notice that none of this is exotic. It is disciplined ecommerce hygiene, applied with AI as the reader.
What you do not need to worry about yet
You do not need to rebuild your checkout for robots tomorrow, and you should be skeptical of anyone selling "agentic checkout" as a finished product. The agent-to-agent buying flow is still early and uneven across platforms. The right posture is to get readable and discoverable now, which pays off immediately in recommendations, and to keep your product data clean so that when agents start buying, yours is a store they can use.
How to get started
- Run an AI-readiness check on your store: crawler access, product schema,
llms.txt, feeds. - Fix the technical basics first, since they cost little and help immediately.
- Enroll in the shopping programs.
- Keep your feeds and structured data clean and current.
Frequently asked questions
Is agentic commerce the same as a chatbot on my site? No. A chatbot answers questions on your store. Agentic commerce is about external AI agents that shop across stores on a person's behalf and may complete purchases for them.
Do I need to be on a specific platform? No. The readiness steps apply to Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and custom storefronts alike.
Is this hype? The recommendation stage is not hype, it is measurable and growing. The full agentic-checkout stage is early. Preparing for it costs little because it overlaps with what you need for recommendations today.
